I-70 highway guide: Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass

I-70 is the main east to west highway across Colorado, and the I-70 Mountain Corridor is the stretch drivers check most often in winter. From Denver, I-70 climbs west through Morrison and Idaho Springs, passes Georgetown, goes through the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel under the Continental Divide, continues through Silverthorne, crosses Vail Pass, then runs through Eagle and Glenwood Springs toward Grand Junction.

The Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel has two bores: the Eisenhower bore for westbound traffic and the Edwin C. Johnson bore for eastbound traffic. Vail Pass carries I-70 over the ridge between Silverthorne and the Vail Valley, at 10,666 feet, with a max grade of 7 percent in the COtrip pass layer.
