Loveland Pass road conditions, US-6 alternate
Loveland Pass on US-6 is the high alternate to the Eisenhower Tunnel. It climbs to 11,992 feet, higher than the tunnel portals, and it is the route generally used by vehicles carrying hazardous materials that are not permitted in the tunnel. Do not treat Loveland Pass as a shortcut. In a storm, the pass can be just as difficult as I-70, and it can close on its own. Recheck current CDOT hazmat rules at publish time before stating which loads must use this route.
Traction and chain rules on US-6: CDOT can activate the Traction Law, Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, or Commercial Vehicle Chain Law on any state highway when weather or road conditions require it. Check CDOT for US-6 separately.
